Creative Flexibility in the Kitchen
Hot Takes from My Conversation with Pamela Salzman
Hi good peeps! Remember that time I sat down with Pamela Salzman? It feels like it’s been f#*king ages ago. She was my second podcast guest ever and let me tell you, she’s an absolute pro in the kitchen...she’s a mom of three, wife, cooking instructor, holistic health counselor, and a best-selling author of her two books, Kitchen Matters and Quicker Than Quick. For over a decade, Pamela’s taught private cooking classes and recently has turned her classes digital for the world to see.
You might be thinking to yourself, “Sarah, why the f#*k are you talking about cooking when you barely know how to make oatmeal?” Trust me, you’re absolutely right...I f#*king hate cooking and it’s a journey I’ll likely never go on BUT Pamela is the type of person who can get ANYONE to learn how to cook and meal prep. Let’s dive deep...
Goals & Eating Healthy Go Hand in Hand
So you’ve told yourself that you’re going to start eating healthier but what does that actually mean? Broad goals just aren’t going to make the cut...you have to be specific with the goals that you want to achieve. Quantify your goals. Here are some examples that’ll help clarify your getting healthier goals...
Drinking more water —> Calculate the amount of water you should drink based on your height, age, and weight. Download an app that will remind you when to drink water.
Eating out less —> Determine how many times a week you can cook and create a meal plan for those days
Eat more vegetables —> Eat at least one vegetable for each color of the rainbow
Create a Meal System That Works for You
Pamela says this about meal planning, “If you don't think you have time for it, then you actually have to do it because it frees you up.” I hear so many woman straight up start stressing about what they’re going to cook that night or worrying that they don’t have the right ingredients for a recipe. F#*k that...take a few hours of your time on a designated day and write down each meal you’ll be making, on what days, and what you’ll need for them. Here are some other tips that can help you destress in the kitchen…
Meal prep for the entire week
Create a binder of your go-to recipes
Organize your fridge in a way where you see all of your ingredients
if you're scared, do it anyway
This tip doesn’t JUST pertain to the kitchen. Implement this sh*t in your entire life. In this week’s episode, Pamela discusses how nervous and scared she was to start her first cooking class and was worried that others would judge her if she messed up or wasn’t entertaining enough...BUT what happens if you just cave into those fears and end up not even pursuing the thing that might bring you fear? It brings you nothing. Even if you’re uncomfortable, push yourself out of your comfort zone and do that thing. Sure you might mess up, but you’ll learn and grow along the way.
I f#*king loved recording this podcast episode with Pamela, and that’s coming from someone who refuses to cook. Most chefs don’t take the beginner into consideration and just spew a bunch of recipes, which is cool I guess but sometimes I just need the person who will explain to me how to make the kitchen a little more drama-free. If you’re looking for tips and tricks on how to make your kitchen more user-friendly, you have to listen to Episode 2 with Pamela Salzman!
