It’s Time To Thrive In Midlife

Hot Takes From My Conversation with Elissa Goodman

Hi, good peeps! We are going to dig deep into a conversation I had a while back with the fabulous Elissa Goodman. Elissa pulled out her golden sh*t shovel and laid out some kick*ss advice for us to start thriving…not just surviving, in the second half of life.

Elissa Goodman is a holistic nutritionist and lifestyle cleanse expert to an A-list roster of celebrities. She was diagnosed with cancer at 32 and lost her husband to his own fight with cancer. After all of this tragedy, she dug deep into finding solutions for helping cure cancer and many other health problems that we face. On her journey, she discovered a wealth of knowledge about health and lifestyle changes that have helped thousands of her clients. She wrote the best-selling book “Cancer Hacks” and has an upcoming book called “Auto-immune Hacks.” Elissa also offers a soup cleanse program to help reset the body, and a digital 7 day reset as well.

We’ll be looking at the tools we need to create a healthier lifestyle on the inside and out to make our bodies the strongest they can be in our midlife remix. We are talking all about cleansing, juicing, supplements, reducing our stress, and different ways we can prevent cancer from becoming a part of our lives. We are looking at the secret sauce to journaling, meditation, and nutrition. It’s not a one size fits all approach, so make sure to take what fits you best!

The Health and Wellness Vending Machine

We all go through sh*t… some a lot more than others. However, we can learn to turn an obstacle into a transformative moment. Use these moments to help you move on rather than go backward. Trauma doesn't mean it's the end. Elissa says, “It just means we need to keep trying different things from the health and wellness vending machine.” What works for one person may not work for another. You have to be open to keep trying new things.

What to Pick From Our Health and Wellness Vending Machine:

  • Become a flexitarian. Don’t be afraid to try different things when trying to recreate your life. Try different things until you find something that works for you. You can try therapy, meditation, or switching up your nutrition. The possibilities are endless.

  • Options are endless. Even if the first thing you try doesn’t end up working, you can keep trying different things to see what works. It won’t always be the first thing you try.

  • Dive deep into any traumas you may have. This is beneficial for your physical and emotional well-being and will help you improve your communication with others.

  • Release your emotions. Find an outlet to release your anxieties and stress. This plays a huge role in our health! It can affect our sleep and compromise our immune system.

  • Get out a journal. This is a way to release some everyday stress. This can help any suppressed emotions or fears you may be feeling. Write down what is bothering you and also try writing down what you are grateful for. Don’t stress if you can’t come up with anything new every day, just keep writing.

Kick Cancer’s A*%

Did you know you can help lower tumor markers just by focusing on what you eat? Focusing more on a plant-based diet can help lower tumor markers and reduce inflammation. Eating more plants and less meat is better for your body. That doesn’t mean that animal proteins are bad for you, just don’t overdo it. Animal proteins can lead to negative reactions to your digestion and overall gut health.

So, what should we be eating more of?

  • Vegetables. Eating vegetables such as spinach, onion, garlic, and leeks are known to create a healthier gut, immune system and reduce inflammation.

What should we be eating less of?

  • Saturated fats and animal proteins. They are hard for your body to break down and affect your overall gut health. There are a lot of toxins, hormones, and antibiotics in animal proteins.

Don’t be afraid of eating certain foods, just try to eat as clean as you possibly can. That means we’ve got to eat our vegetables. It doesn’t mean that you have to do a complete 180 in your life. Aim to eat healthy 80% of the time and the other 20% of the time enjoy life’s little guilty pleasures such as Elissa’s favorite…Tequila!

Juicing, Supplements, Cleansing, Inflammation …Oh My!

Focusing on changing your nutrition can feel overwhelming! However, Elissa focuses on a plant-based diet that includes juicing and supplements, which helps with cleansing and inflammation.

Where do we start?

  • Juicing! This is a quick and easy way to get more veggies into your diet. You will receive the benefits of different vitamins and minerals on a cellular level.

  • Ditch the processed junk. Sugar, gluten, and dairy are high inflammatory foods that can have severe repercussions on our overall health.

  • Add in supplements. Check-in with your physician and get an overall look at your health. See what supplements you can add to your diet.

I hope these tips and tricks will serve you well in the new year! Our goal is to become a “flexitarian” as Elissa calls it. Focus on eating healthy 80% of the time…and don’t forget to live a little too! Focus on getting more vegetables in your diet by juicing and figuring out what supplements would help your overall health. Remember your inner health is just as important. Make time to focus on any past traumas you may have by going to therapy, picking up a meditation practice, or just writing out your feelings. Dig deep with your own golden sh*t shovel to find what works for you in your second half of life.
